Sue Carol O'Mara Nerness

Sue Carol O’Mara Nerness found peace in the arms of Jesus on the morning of March 26, 2024.


Sue was born in Cambridge, Iowa on May 25, 1935, to C. C. (Neal) and Florence (Crawford) O’Mara. She lived her early years in Cambridge, Iowa where she grew up, went to school, and graduated with the class of 1952.


She worked at Employers Mutual in Des Moines and on April 6, 1957, she married her high school sweetheart of 67 years, Daryl “Kit” Arnold Nerness. After 3 years in the Marine Corp., they were blessed with two sons, Daryl Arnold Nerness Jr. and John O’Mara Nerness.

Sue also worked for Preferred Risk in several positions and finished her working career at Siemans Corp. in Osceola.


She had been homebound for several years. Her husband, son, and nephew Dennis O’Mara, lived in the home and cared for her.


Sue was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, and sisters: Dennis, Richard, William, John, Patricia, and Dorothy, two brothers-in-law Larry Nernes and Dwight Nernes.

Surviving are her husband Daryl Sr., sons Daryl Jr. and John (Kristy) of Maiden, NC., sister Florence Koch of Tucson, AZ., six grandchildren, Jessica and Amanda of Maiden, NC., Seth of Pittsburgh, PA., Shilo of South Bend, IN., Bridgett Dickemann of St. Louis, Mo., area and Mandy Buttz of Leon, IA., six great-grandchildren Zoey, Zeb, Zabe, Zane, Zadie and Weston and five great-great-grandchildren. Sisters-in-law Connie Kangas of Rome, NY., Helen Nernes and Judy Nernes both of Leon, IA., and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.


Graveside services will be held on April 20, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. in the Cambridge Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to the Cambridge Dorcas Hall following the services for a light lunch and fellowship.


 Thank you, Lord, for blessing us with Sue! She was devoted and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was born with the God given gift of hospitality towards everyone. Once she met you, she opened her heart, and you were a lifetime friend.
