January 3, 1963 – January 31, 2025
Herbert Wayne Simmons Jr. was born on January 3, 1963, in Harvey, Illinois, and passed away on January 31, 2025, in the CIC unit at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Wayne was very proud of his service to his country as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. After his time in the military, he worked in retail, where he made many lasting connections and friendships.
He is survived by his mother, Judy Crabtree; three sisters, Tonja Sims, Bamia Simmons, and Holly Simmons; and two stepdaughters, April and Desiree. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Sr.; his stepfather, Marvin Crabtree; and his nephew, Damion Louk.
A military service to honor Herbert’s life and service will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr, Adel, IA 50003, on February 28, 2025, at 12:30 p.m.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the staff at the Veterans Hospital, especially in the CIC unit, as well as the Merle Hay Funeral Home and The Cremation Society of Iowa for their care and support. The kindness shown to Herbert and to his family will always be remembered.
