Dieter Cross


Dieter Cross passed away April 6, 2025, after a long illness. He was born on February 16, 1949, in Heidelberg, Germany and lived in Karlsruhe, Germany until the age of 6. He and his mother immigrated to the United States living in Oklahoma.


Dieter attended Putman City School system from 1st grade through graduation and was a member of the prestigious 12-year club. He was active in sports, lettering in football, basketball, and wrestling. He attended Central State College (now the University of Central Oklahoma) for one year before joining the Marine Corps in January 1969. Upon completing basic training and serving in Vietnam, Dieter returned to Oklahoma to attend college for an additional year. Missing the military life, he re-entered the Marine Corps and served in various billets until his retirement as a gunnery sergeant in May 1990.


After his military retirement, he started employment with Principal Financial Group as a medical claims examiner and retired in June 2008 as a disability fraud analyst.


Dieter was an avid golfer, having played in many tournaments in Germany, Japan, and the United States. He was also an avid football fan of the University of Oklahoma and would travel to see his Sooners whenever possible.


He was preceded in death by his parents, H.G. and Leonore Cross, and his wife Paula Cross.

Dieter is survived by his brother Kenneth of Plano, TX, daughter Karla, and grandchildren, Keith and Alexandria.


His graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, April 16th at 11 am at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr, Adel, IA 50003.
