Clifford Stokes, age 91, passed away at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines, IA on February 14, 2023.
Dr. Stokes was born in Louisville, Nebraska on April 2, 1931, and attended Cass County School before graduating from Nebraska City High School in 1950. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
After discharge, he attended Peru State College where he received the BA degree, He began his teaching career at Brock, Nebraska where he served as a high school teacher and principal.
Stokes became high school principal at Sidney High School in 1959, then served as Superintendent at Essex, Guthrie County, and Stuart-Menlo, Iowa. He retired from the Iowa Department of Education in 1997, where he served as a Regional Consultant, Accreditation Consultant, and School Improvement Specialist.
Dr. Stokes never married and his parents, Guy L. and Esther (Murdoch); sister, Flora Mae; brothers, Donald and Ted Sr.; and cousins, Cecil Murdoch, Lavonda McAfee (Murdoch), and Alice Diedrichsen (Kruger-Murdoch) preceded him in death. Several nieces and nephews, great nephews, and great-great nephews survive, as well as many cousins, Darlene Thorne (Murdoch) of Nehawka, Nebraska, and Carolyn Murdoch of Manley, Nebraska.
