Brenda Gayle Mortis Stubblefield of Clive, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, April 6th, 2024. Brenda was born on May 31, 1948, to R.L. and Blanche (nee Stone) Mortis in Henderson, Kentucky.
Brenda, who was known by her friends as Gayle, grew up in Henderson, Kentucky. She enjoyed riding horses and talked a lot about the time she spent on her parents’ farm as a child. She had two children, Steve and Crystal Imboden. She moved to Ft. Myers, Florida in the early 80s. There she attended Covenant Community Ministries for over ten years where she served as a greeter and volunteered for Angel Tree with her daughter. She and her husband Richard moved to Gretna, Virginia in 2002. There, she attended Abundant Life Ministries where she became involved with the media team. She and Richard moved back to Florida to be closer to her son in 2021 then to Iowa in 2022 to be closer to her daughter. Brenda’s dream was to split her time between Iowa and Florida because she had children and grandchildren in both states. She loved her family dearly and always wanted to be close to them. Brenda loved to go to Cozy Café for breakfast almost every week without fail. She loved to pray for people and even when she was ill and recovering from a biopsy, she made her way to a sick man in the hospital to pray for him. She never met a stranger. She fought hard to stay with her family but made her way to The Father’s arms close to Midnight on Saturday, April 6. She was surrounded by family and will be greatly missed. Go Rest High mom, Nanna, and Grandmother. We love you!
Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Stubblefield, her parents, R.L. and Blanche Mortis, and her brother Gene Gobin.
She is survived by her children Steve (Michelle) Imboden and Crystal (Ellen) Imboden-Hall, her sister, Carol (Tommy) Williams, 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
There will be a memorial lunch gathering on April 22, 2024, at 12:00 pm at the American Legion, 910 Main Street, Van Meter, Iowa, followed by a brief service and burial at the National Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, Iowa, at 2:00 pm where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Richard. There will also be a Celebration of Life held in Labelle, FL in early June.
