Arthur “Art” H. Munsell, age 93, of Des Moines, IA, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Karen Acres Health Care Center in Urbandale, IA.
Art was born on January 31, 1929, the son of Arthur C. and Fannie M. (Hodges) Munsell in Des Moines, IA. He attended Lincoln High School in Des Moines. On August 18, 1950, he was united in marriage to Barbara Stegman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA. Shortly after, Art joined the US Army and served in Alaska as a mechanic during the Korean War. When he returned, the couple made their home in Des Moines, where they welcomed their three sons, Mike, Dave, and Steve. Art began his career at Firestone, where he worked the night shift for 34 years. Upon retirement from Firestone, Art began his mission work at Wakonda Christian Church, where he served as the maintenance engineer until the age of 85.
In his younger years, Art enjoyed working on cars, helping with his sons’ little league baseball teams, and taking family vacations, especially to Colorado. In his middle years, Art spent time with Barb tending to his gardens and flowers. In his later years, Art enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and the B&B gang from church, Saturday morning breakfasts with friends and family, watching the wildlife, eating his honey-nut Cheerios, and reading God’s Word by his wood-burning stove.
This past August, Art and Barb celebrated 72 years of marriage. Art was a loving and faithful husband throughout his life. Those who knew Art would describe him as the most humble man one would ever meet with a very visible love for Jesus that was felt by everyone who knew and met him.
Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife, Barb, their sons, Mike (Tracey) Munsell of Grand Junction, CO, Steven (Donna) Munsell of Des Moines, IA, and four grandchildren, David Munsell of Van Meter, IA, Allyson Scott of Des Moines, IA, Sam Munsell of Des Moines, IA, and Abby Munsell of Des Moines, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dave Munsell; his sister, Florence (Robert) Abild; and his brother-in-laws, Tom Stegman and Wilbur Stegman.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Art on January 28th from 1-3pm at Wakonda Christian Church (3938 Fleur Drive Des Moines) in the Cord Room. Memorial contributions can be made in Art’s honor to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
