Tommy (Abdur) was born at Broadlawns General (Polk County) Hospital on August 3, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa to Travis Jerome Sr. and Willye Mae (Crenshaw) Fowler.
Tommy (Abdur) attended and graduated from North High School in 1965. While in attendance he lettered twice in wrestling and lettered once in football. He later studied to be a paralegal at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) so he could become more educated in the law. He served in the military at the Lowry Air Force Base in Denver Colorado. He was a Licensed Barber and attended Davenport Barber College. Tommy (Abdur) mentored under Albert "Hinky" Arthur Brewer, Jr. at Al’s Barber Shop and worked several years at Harlan’s Barber Shop, both in Des Moines, Iowa. He also worked for many years at the New York Barber shop in Queens, New York. Tommy (Abdur) retired from his line of work as a Barber in 2010, to continue his pursuit to becoming an entrepreneur with the name of his business Wham-Whams & Zoo-Zoos. Tommy (Abdur) was an avid bicycle rider, but many times liked to walk to and from where he was going. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, and he loved to dance and was the hype man when the music came on. He was always the first person on the dance floor. Tommy (Abdur) practiced the pillars of Islam, the profession of faith in studying the Quran, prayer, and fasting.
Tommy (Abdur) peacefully entered eternal rest at his residence on Sunday, February 4, 2024.
He leaves to cherish his memory, daughters, Nina (Fowler) Booker, Jihan (Fowler) Phillips; son Tohamed Fowler; brothers Michael “Mickey” Fowler (Sandi), William “Bill” Fowler (Paulette), Richard “Ref Travis” Fowler; sisters Kathleen “Kathy” (Fowler) Roland, and Gail (Fowler) Langford; 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Travis J. Fowler, Sr., and Willye Mae (Crenshaw) Fowler; brother Travis J. Fowler Jr.; sister Mary “Bobby” (Fowler) Francis; nephews, Anthony H. Langford Jr, Njeri M. Fowler, and Michael A. Francis.
In Lieu of Funeral Services
No funeral services will be held. However, friends and family may come and celebrate at the Fowler family home located at 1155 18th Street, Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, February 10, 2024, from the hours of 11 AM to 4 PM.
